Call for papers - Dossier Fare-Free
Josum is a scientific journal created and edited by the Instituto de Pesquisa Multiplicidade Mobilidade Urbana (IPMMU). The special issue is organized by the editor-in-chief, Glaucia Pereira, and the editorial production manager, Marcelo de Trói, with institutional support from the Rosa Luxemburgo Foundation. The theme of the dossier was chosen based on the understanding that Fare-Free Public Transport may be part of the solution to the deepening urban transportation crisis, a perspective reinforced by the multiplication of recent experiences.
Research Topics
In this dossier, we want to understand how the Fare-Free articulates with other fields, with innovative, interdisciplinary approaches, advancing discussions, research and policy evaluations and experiences that:
- demonstrates challenges, methodological contributions, and urban and territorial indicators of public policies for the reduction of social inequalities, the labor market or the urban immobility imposed by the new configurations of labor relations, or reflects on socio-territorial inequalities, increased access to opportunities in the cities, from the Fare-Free, with a gender, race or intersectional approach;
- problematize Fare-Free Transportation from an antiracist and/or feminist mobility perspective and that also concern issues related to spatial segregation in cities;
- discusses the role and challenges of the Fare-Free, especially concerning the democratization of access to mobility and the city, in different scales, for the structuring of public policy systems that may be in a possible Single Mobility System (SUM), in the Brazilian case, and/or similar initiatives in other countries of the world;
- analyze how the Fare-Free Transportation policy can be financed, thinking it through its critics and challenges, as an alternative to the financialized production of public transportation infrastructure and as a practice of justice in territories threatened by urban dispossession;
- develop historical or revisionist retrospectives, with specific analytical approaches and/or reports of international experiences of Fare-Free/Free Pass Transportation that dialogue with the literature, including conceptualization and interdisciplinary analysis of results or advance methodological proposals for evaluating policies already in use;
- discuss the Fare-Free policy as a social technology as opposed to Techno solutionism from a critical reading of "Smart Cities";
- relate Fare-Free to the redesign of cities and transportation networks, creating new transport modal hierarchies, new commuting flows, new uses and appropriations of urban spaces, or even the emergence of new commuting technologies;
- relates Fare-Free to modal transport and energy transition, to the climate crisis, to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, to the improvement of traffic and street quality in cities;
- Studies that understand the relationship of the Fare-Free policies with collective political practices, with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, especially those involving the right to the city and the issue of climate change;
- Other related topics.
About the dossier
Texts may be submitted in scientific articles, data articles, essays, and interviews and must obey the guidelines for authors established by the editorial policy of Josum, available at this link. Josum accepts texts in Portuguese, Spanish, and English. Texts submitted to the thematic dossier section do not need to pay the APC (Article Processing Charges), and publication is open science.
