JOSUM's Editorial Board reflects different points of view on urban mobility

2022-04-13

It happened last Tuesday, April 12, 2022, the inauguration of the people who will be part of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Sustainable Urban Mobility - JOSUM. The Journal edited by the Instituto de Pesquisa Multiplicidade Mobilidade Urbana - IPMMU, is the only Brazilian scientific Journal focused exclusively on the theme of urban mobility. "This is an old dream that is taking shape more and more. Today we have taken a crucial step with the inauguration of our Editorial Board composed of incredible people who are already collaborating a lot so that JOSUM can become a reference in this field of studies", said Glaucia Pereira, editor-in-chief of the Journal, researcher, and founder of IPMMU.
The main concern of the Journal's general coordinator was to invite different people to compose the Board that could reflect the innovative role of the initiative. "Glaucia was very intelligent in her proposal to think of a scientific journal that would break the barriers between the humanities and the exact sciences. In addition, we always thought of inviting people who could represent the diversity of gender, race, different regions of Brazil, and areas that also complement each other in the discussion of such an interdisciplinary and complex theme as mobility", explains Marcelo de Trói, the Institute's editorial production manager.
Among the functions of the Council is the approval of the Journal's editorial policy and advising the publication's general coordinator, composed of the editor-in-chief and the editorial production manager. To be part of the Editorial Board, the person needs to be invited or send his intention to be part of the body, fulfilling at least two of the five requirements established by the bylaws.
The first formation of the JOSUM Editorial Board is composed of the following people:
Dr. Daniel Caribé (Salvador Mobility Observatory)
Ms. Federica Giovanna Fochesato - Master in Urban and Regional Planning
Dr. Gabriela Leandro Pereira (School of Architecture, Federal University of Bahia)
Ms. Glaucia Pereira (IPMMU)
Dr. Glória Cecília dos Santos Figueiredo (Faculty of Architecture, Federal University of Bahia)
Dr. Jaqueline Gomes de Jesus (National School of Public Health Sérgio Arouca - Oswaldo Cruz Foundation)
Ms. Joice Berth - Architect and Urban Planner (Columnist for Elle Magazine)
Ms. Kelly Cristina Fernandes Augusto - Architect and Urban Planner (Columnist for UOL)
Ms. Lorena Freitas Pereira (Institute for Transportation Policies and Development)
Dr. Maisa Tobias (School of Civil Engineering - Federal University of Pará)
Dr. Marcelo de Trói (IPMMU)
Dr. Paula Santoro (School of Architecture - University of São Paulo)
During the induction meeting, the members of the Council were unanimous in highlighting the diversity of race, gender, and region of Brazil of the members. Lorena Pereira from ITDP thanked the invitation to join the Council and pointed out the research gaps in urban mobility, highlighting the innovative role of JOSUM. "It is important to open space for people in the process of scientific development, who are often discouraged in research," she added. For Jaqueline Gomes de Jesus, there is a relationship between urban mobility and migrations, conflicts, and that leads us to reflect on identity, gender, and its importance in the research field: "These are themes that are not much discussed in urban mobility, and I wish that the debate of these themes are inserted in the Journal". Gabriela Pereira cited her relationship with gender and race studies. She expressed her desire to join in a multidisciplinary and regionally diverse conversation "where urban mobility is different in every part of the country". The meeting was also attended by Daniel Caribé, Federica Fochesato, Kelly Cristina Fernandes and Maísa Tobias, all members of the Council, as well as professionals from Instituto Multiplicidade, such as Milene Fernandes and Diogo Lopes Dutra.
From now on, JOSUM begins to be structured to receive submissions in the continuous flow and thematic dossiers. Among the next steps in the editorial production is the call for referees, who must have at least a Master's degree, and the release of a schedule for the thematic dossiers that should focus on the relationship of mobilities with the climate issue, issues on mobility involving gender, race, and class, and issues related to access to cities.

For the editor-in-chief of the publication, JOSUM accumulates some innovations such as the speed in evaluating texts, the lack of a title requirement for authors' submission, and highly instigating formats and publication guidelines. "We believe that scientific production does not need to be restricted to academia. Civil society and other organizations have done much to discuss and improve urban mobility, which cannot be ignored. We want and need to work together. The promotion of open science and open data policies make access to knowledge more democratic. Our goal is that in 2023 we already have an impact factor on scientific publications to be measured," adds Glaucia Pereira.

JOSUM
The Journal of Sustainable Urban Mobility - JOSUM is a publication of the Instituto de Pesquisa Multiplicidade Mobilidade Urbana - IPMMU and works towards open science in which people can read and disseminate its contents. The Journal accepts publications in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. The Journal's main objective is to publish scientific articles that focus on sustainable urban mobility and have a social, environmental, economic, or governance impact. With simple submission formats, the Journal aims at the scientific dissemination of results that need and deserve to be shared. JOSUM will work with a charge per article approved for publication in the continuous flow. In Open Science, this procedure is known as Article Processing Charges (APC). The publication fee is charged to promote, produce, and maintain the Journal. In the so-called thematic dossiers, the submission will be without a maintenance fee due to financial difficulties that have affected many academic students and researchers. With this action, JOSUM intends to disseminate the research underway within universities that, many times, is carried out with economic difficulties by graduate students.
